What the extension does
Smart Download Organizer, developed by bhavik.id, organizes new browser downloads by choosing relative subfolders inside the browser's configured Downloads location. It runs locally on your device.
Download information processed on your device
The extension uses the tentative download filename, filename extension, and, when useful for an extensionless file, MIME type provided by Chrome to choose a destination folder. Chrome provides other metadata in the same API object, including source URLs; the extension does not read or use source URL or referrer fields.
For recently routed downloads, the extension temporarily keeps a download ID, category, and chosen folder in service-worker memory. On completion it can look up that specific download's state and local filename to verify the destination before displaying a saved result. It does not query the full download history. These temporary records are bounded and disappear when processed, erased, interrupted, or when the service worker stops. They are never written to persistent storage.
While the popup is open, a filename may be sent within the extension through local runtime messaging and displayed for that popup session. It is not saved in an activity log. Closing the popup clears its display. The extension never opens or reads file contents.
Information saved locally
The extension uses chrome.storage.local to save:
- Organization preferences, theme, enabled categories, chosen folder names, and custom extension rules.
- Aggregate counts of chosen destinations and confirmed completions, current-day and per-category counts, last category, and last-action time.
- Installation time, first-run dismissal, and optional review-prompt preferences and cooldown dates.
It does not persist raw download filenames, full local file paths, download IDs, source URLs, referrers, file contents, or a per-download history. User-entered destination folder names are saved as settings. Preferences and counters are not synced to a cloud account by the extension.
If the user allows the extension in incognito mode, incognito downloads may be organized using these preferences, but are excluded from statistics, completion tracking, and popup activity.
No transmission, tracking, or sale
The extension does not send download data, local preferences, or counters to the developer or to remote servers. No file contents are uploaded. There are no analytics, telemetry, crash-reporting services, advertising trackers, user accounts, or advertising SDKs. Browsing history is not collected, website activity is not monitored, and page content is not inspected. No extension user data is sold, shared, or transferred to third parties.
The extension contains no remote executable code and does not make background network requests. If you choose to open a website, support, privacy, or store link, your browser navigates to that website normally. The destination site's privacy practices apply to that visit. No download metadata is attached to those links.
Why permissions are needed
Chrome labels the downloads permission “Manage your downloads.” This extension uses that API to choose a relative filename before a new download is saved and to observe and verify completion of recently routed downloads. It does not cancel, pause, delete, open, or overwrite downloaded files. The storage permission is used for the local preferences and counters described above.
Your controls and retention
You can turn organization off, disable individual categories, change folders, remove custom rules, or restore default settings. Privacy settings include a separate action to clear counters. Settings reset keeps aggregate counters, installation age, onboarding dismissal, and review opt-out preferences. Uninstalling the extension removes its local extension storage through Chrome; it does not delete downloaded files. Independently created browser/profile/device backups are controlled by your browser or operating system.
The optional review prompt is disabled until a real store URL is configured. If enabled in a release, it uses local installation age and confirmed-completion counts, respects a cooldown, and offers a permanent opt-out. It never depends on a positive rating or blocks functionality.
Limited use
The use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Information is used only for the disclosed download-organization functionality and its related local settings and status.
Changes and contact
This policy will be updated when actual data practices change. Any material change will be disclosed consistently in the extension and store listing as required. Please do not include sensitive filenames or file contents in a support request unless necessary and you choose to share them.
This website
This static website includes no analytics, tracking scripts, cookies, forms, or browser storage. The hosting provider may process ordinary request information such as your IP address and requested page when serving the website. That website traffic is separate from the extension, which does not send download data to this website.
